Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1 each year. These Day of the Dead student choice board activities for elementary school are perfect for celebrating and learning about the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead in your classroom!

They are great for reading and writing centers, as extension or early-finisher activities, or given as take-home independent practice work.

This packet includes a choice board of 9 Day of the Dead activities and writing prompts (journal page included).

Students can choose from activities like:

Papel Picado

Research papel picado, how it is made, and what it is used for. Then, cut out your own papel picado using tissue paper.

Meaning of the Season

There is a very large Mexican population in the United States. Research how Day of the Dead is celebrated in the USA. Are the celebrations here different from the celebrations in Mexico?

Flower Power

Marigolds are known as the “flower of the dead.” Research why they have been given this nickname. Then, write a summary of their purpose during the Day of the Dead celebrations. Using tissue paper, create your own marigolds.
