Easter Resources for Teachers

Why Do We Celebrate Easter?

Easter is a Christian holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ and celebrating the belief in Christ’s victory over death. It concludes a series of Christian events and holidays starting with a 40 day period of fasting and prayer, known as Lent, and ending with Holy Week, which includes Holy Thursday (also known as “Maundy Thursday” - commemorating Jesus’ Last Supper with his 12 disciples), Good Friday (when the crucifixion of Jesus Christ is observed) and Easter Sunday. Despite this being a very significant holy day for Christians, many Easter traditions and symbols have roots in pagan celebrations and in the Jewish holiday of Passover.

How is Easter Celebrated?

Many Christians around the world celebrate Easter with church services, which might involve candles, representing the light of Christ, or flowers, representing new life. Some Easter traditions can be traced back to celebrations predating Christianity, for example, Easter egg hunts or egg decorating. Some people might ask - why Easter eggs? The egg represents fertility and birth in certain pagan traditions and eggs later became part of religious Easter celebrations due to the link with Christian beliefs around new life and rebirth.

When is Easter 2022?

Unlike other major Christian holidays, the date of Easter changes year-on-year, however Easter always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. In 2022, Easter Sunday will be observed on April 17. Easter is not a national holiday as it already falls on a Sunday which is generally observed as a non-working day.
