The History of Halloween

Halloween is known today as a much-loved holiday for wearing costumes, going door-to-door to ask for candy, and watching scary movies, but its origins go back centuries.

The name “Halloween” originates from “All Hallows Eve”, becoming “All Hallows E’en” and later, “Hallowe’en”. This was the evening before All Hallows Day, later becoming All Saints’ Day, a Christian celebration of martyrs and saints that began in the 8th century. All Souls’ Day is celebrated the following day, November 2, and is a day that honors the dead.

Celebrated on October 31, Samhain (pronounced sah-win) is a Celtic festival that marks the end of summer and was believed to be a day when the ghosts of the dead returned. It was commemorated with bonfires and the wearing of costumes - traditions that echo into modern-day Halloween celebrations.
