These Memorial Day classroom activities for second through fifth grade are a great way to build awareness of this meaningful holiday while giving students a chance to use their reading, writing, and research skills. This choice board is flexible enough to be used in class or as a remote learning resource.

Students can choose from reading and writing activities like:

We Remember You

Draw or print a picture of a red poppy. Underneath the poppy, write a free verse poem that describes why we remember those who have died in wars and conflicts.

Thank a Veteran

Write a letter to a veteran in order to thank them for their service. Be sure to include all parts of a friendly letter.

Soldier Similes

In your writing journal, write at least 5 similes that use the following words to make comparisons about a soldier: Brave, strong, smart, fast, and kind.
