Pair your summer reading lists with this 9-activity choice board of fun summer reading activities for middle school students. Each activity combines a fun project or challenge with a reading or comprehension skill to help keep students engaged in their summer reading while retaining instruction from the previous year.

If you are giving summer reading assignments to your outgoing or incoming middle school students this year, these activities can easily be completed independently and collected on the first day of school. This choice board even includes a Summer Reading Record that students (and you) can use to track their progress through a summer reading list.

Looking for summer reading list suggestions? Pair this choice board with our Summer Reading List for grades 6-8.

Students can choose from reading skill-building activities like:

Vocabulary Wall

Create a vocabulary word wall in your room. Each time you come across a new word in your books, look it up, write it on a strip of paper or sticky note, and add it to your wall. At the end of the summer, take a picture of your wall and write a short essay about your summer using 10 of the words.

Play Detective

Choose a mystery book to read. Keep a “case file'' and play detective for each chapter that you read. Write down any clues or info that you learned at the end of each chapter, and make/revise predictions throughout the story. Can you solve the case before you reach the end of the book?

The Real Ending...

Read a novel of your choice. Rewrite its ending in order to demonstrate how you think the book should have ended, or could have ended!
