5-10 Minutes
Materials Needed:

  • Single-serving juice or drink box (1, or 1 per student)
  • Large multiple-serving juice or beverage bottle

As a class, determine whether or not there is more or less packaging used when items are purchased in larger containers. You can either use one empty juice box, or give students juice boxes to drink. Compare the weight of the empty multiple-serving juice bottle to the weight of all the empty juice boxes needed to equal the same amount in the larger container. Can consumers reduce packaging and waste by choosing to purchase larger sizes?
