FutureFit Extension Activities
Reflect
(10-15 minutes):
Have students pretend it is 1890 and they just immigrated to the United States, and they are writing a letter to their family back in their home country. In their letters, they can answer the following questions:
• What was their journey like?
• What was Ellis Island like?
• Did they meet anyone interesting?
• What did they do when they arrived?
• Where are they living?
• How is life different in their new country?
Students should write from the perspective of an immigrant and be creative!
Adapt
(10-15 minutes):
Ask students to consider if they would like to move to a new country at some point in their lives. Students should write an essay discussing the following:
• What country would they move to and why?
• What would they have to change about their way of life to assimilate to the new culture?
• What challenges would they face?
• What would they want to see and do when they arrived?
