They'll learn all about the entrepreneurial mindset and what it takes to become an entrepreneur, design and build a working prototype of a fidget spinner using measurement and conversion skills for distance, weight, and currency, use the inventor's mindset to test and solve design problems, and then create a product launch and marketing plan for their fidget spinners as they demonstrate their understanding of entrepreneurship.

This project-based learning lesson is designed to support and reinforce the concepts taught as part of a lesson on Measurement and Conversion or Entrepreneurship. It is built around 5 inquiry-based milestones that incorporate cross-curricular hands-on projects, formative and summative assessments, independent and group activities, and extensions.


In the course of this project-based learning unit, students will:

  • Research and document the entrepreneurial mindset and learn how the basics of becoming an entrepreneur;
  • Design and build a working prototype of a fidget spinner using measurement and conversion techniques;
  • Perform "market research" and product testing to refine their designs and report on the process to the class;
  • Learn about and use the inventor's mindset to solve problems related to designing, building, and launching products;
  • "Show what they know" by creating a product launch and marketing plan for the fidget spinner they designed, built, and tested.


Students will acquire necessary background knowledge of entrepreneurship as part of this project, and instructional materials for providing that background are included in the Teacher Pack. Students should be familiar with basic measurement and conversion techniques for distance, weight, and currency.


This project-based unit is divided into 5 milestones. The minimum suggested duration for completing this project-based unit is 5 class periods. However, the unit is completely flexible can be lengthened or shortened as necessary or desired, based on available class time and interest level.
