FutureFit Extension Activities
Adapt
(10-15 minutes, menu from a zoo, such as Nashville Zoo Dining)
Present the following scenario to the students: “Your class is going on a field trip to the zoo, and your parents have given you $30 for lunch and spending money. Choose a “healthy” lunch option including a protein, fruit and/or veggie and a drink. Add up the total cost of the lunch. How much money is left for souvenirs? Now add a twist to the scenario: You lost $15 of the money your parents gave you. Now, what will you do? Will you choose the same items on the menu? If not, what will you change and why?”
Get Going
(10-15 minutes):
Present the following scenario to the students: “You want a new bike, and your parents are telling you that you have to earn the money to pay for half of the cost. What can you do to earn the money and how long will it take?” Allow the students to find the cost of a bike on the internet, and then calculate the amount they need to earn. Ask them to write a plan for making the money and how long it will take until they can purchase the bike.
