Investigate

(10-15 minutes, computers/tablets and internet)
Have students choose a “favorite” from the following 5 categories, and then use the internet to research the parent company and its stock symbol (Yahoo Finance is a good place to search for stock symbols).

  • Favorite cereal
  • Favorite soda
  • Favorite TV show
  • Favorite video game
  • Favorite sneaker or other athletic gear

Get Real

(10-15 minutes, computers/tablets and internet):
After finding the parent companies of their some of their favorite products, have students use the NASDAQ stock exchange website to find out how many shareholders own the parent company. (This information can be obtained by searching for a company, and then clicking the "Ownership Summary" link under "Holdings" on the left-hand menu of the search results page. For example, here is a list of Nike's shareholders.)
Point out that companies are owned by shareholders, which may include thousands of individuals who own various numbers of shares.
