This Christmas mini-project, focused around the classic holiday poem 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, is perfect for helping your students apply their reading, math, and writing skills. Working both independently and in groups, they'll use reading comprehension, figurative language, and math along with a healthy dose of artistic creativity to visualize and interact with the classic poem!

This mini-project is perfect for 1 or 2 class periods, or can be divided up into smaller time blocks for completion as an early-finisher or extension activity.

What's Included:

  • Teaching instructions with notes on materials, prep time, group work, and modeling
  • Step-by-step student instructions and worksheets for completing the reading, math, writing, and illustration activities
  • The complete text of the 'Twas the Night Before Christmas poem

Project Activities:

  • Part 1 - Illustrate an Example of Figurative Language: Using the text of the poem and art materials, students will choose and make an illustration based on the figurative language in the poem - making both figurative and literal renderings of passages
  • Part 2 - Prepare Santa's Snack: Students will make a trip to the cookie store to pick out the perfect combination of cookies for Santa - using their math skills to stay within budget while still making the best choices
  • Part 3 - Gingerbread Man Poetry: After the trip to the cookie store, students will model the descriptive language of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas to write a poem about a gingerbread man cookie, and then illustrate the included template to match their poem
