FutureFit Extension Activities
Get Real
10-15 minutes
Materials needed:
An object that students bring from home, and index cards
Have students set up their own classroom museum. First, ask students to determine the theme of their exhibition. Ask students to bring in an object from home that fits the theme. Students should bring the object to class (with parent permission) and create a museum label describing what they brought. The label should have the following information (from Creating a Classroom Museum):
- Name of the object (and when it was created, if known)
- What the object is made of
- Who owns the object and why it is important to the owner
- Point out any particular parts the view should pay attention to and why
Allow students to set up objects in a specified area where students can “tour” the classroom museum.
Adapt
(10-15 minutes):
As an extension to creating labels, ask students to work in groups to critique and revise the labels. Divide students into pairs or small groups and have them exchange the labels they created. Ask students to read the labels from the point of view of a person viewing the object as a visitor to the museum. Students can give each other feedback about making the label livelier or clearer, and then make revisions to the labels in the above exercise before or after setting up the exhibit.
