In this drawing activity, students draw a picture of an animal they would like as a best friend. Use this printable on its own, or as an enrichment activity for Elsie's Bird by Jane Yolen.

This worksheet includes several FutureFit Extension Activities that highlight 21st Century skills like critical thinking and service mentality. These FutureFit Extension Activities are designed to reinforce the concepts included in the worksheet activity while integrating real-world skills. They can be used as in-class independent practice or group activities, or assigned for take-home or independent work.

Investigate/Serve

Discuss with your students that for the differently-abled, pets are sometimes more than just friends: Sometimes people have pets as service animals to help keep them safe or help them do human tasks! Have your students work on researching how service animals are really like best friends to their owners. Have a classroom discussion after the activity to have your students share their findings.
