Objectives

  • Students will gather facts on old growth forests and the logging industry from reading There's an Owl in the Shower.
  • Students will gather facts about the Spotted Owl in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Students will write a persuasive (opinion, expository) essay, taking one side of the issue.

Materials

  • Internet access
  • Books: There's an Owl in the Shower

Procedures

  1. Pass out the form below. Tell students that they will be reading a book which has lots of information on the spotted owl and old growth forests. Tell them to jot down facts that they find while reading the book.
  2. Use the Internet to check the validity of the facts and to gather more information.
  3. Have students write a persuasive essay taking one side of the debate over old growth forests vs. logging.
  4. Extension ideas:
    • Stage a debate between members of the class.
    • Have students make posters depicting their points of view.
