Clarence Thomas
1948-Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court
Birthplace: Pin Point (Savannah), GA
Graduate of Yale Law School, 1974
Thomas is a prominent conservative active in Republican
causes. While he chaired the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (1982–90)
during the Reagan and Bush administrations, he tried to change federal
affirmative action laws. In 1990 he was appointed judge on the Court of
Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In July 1991, Thomas was
nominated to the Supreme Court by President Bush, to replace Thurgood
Marshall. In October of that year, when approval appeared forthcoming,
the Senate Judiciary Committee reopened confirmation hearings to consider
charges by Anita Hill, a University of Oklahoma law professor. She accused
Thomas of sexual harassment while they both worked at the EEOC. The controversial
charges did not alter the committee's approval of Thomas.
