Andrew Young

Civil rights leader, Clergyman, UN Represenative
Birthplace: New Orleans, LA

Andrew Young was a leading civil-rights activist in the 1960s and, as a democrat from Georgia, served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1973-77). Under President Carter, Young was permanent representative to the UN (1977-79) and was noted for his frankness. From 1982 to 1990, he was mayor of Atlanta. In 1990, he sought the democratic nomination for governor of Georgia, but did not win. In 1999, he was elected to a two-year term as head of the National Council of Churches.
