Maya Angelou

1928-
Poet, Novelist, Composer, Actor
Birthplace: St. Louis, MO

Grammy Award-winning poet, writer, composer, and actress Maya Angelou is the author of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1970), an autobiography about growing up in segregated Arkansas. She has appeared in several theatrical productions, including Porgy and Bess (1954), Jean Genet's The Blacks (1960), and Cabaret for Freedom (1960), a collaboration with actor Godfrey Cambridge that she also produced and directed. During the 1960s, she was active in the civil rights movement. In 1993, Angelou read her poem “On the Pulse of Morning” at President Clinton's inauguration.
