Investigate

(10-15 minutes, “Word Problems Video Sorting Mat and Clues” printable, scissors, glue, Smart Board and Internet):
Give each student a copy of the “Word Problems Video Sorting Mat and Clues,” and ask them to cut apart the clues. Show the video “Word Problems: Finding and Using Clues Video.” As students watch, have them sort the word problem clues into the appropriate square on the sorting mat. You may need to show the video a second time if students didn’t catch the clues the first time. Go over the correct answers with the class. The students can glue the correct clues on to the mat for future reference.

Relate

(5-10 minutes):
Using the completed sorting mat from the activity above, ask students to work in pairs to write a word problem from each of the categories (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
