Adapt

Have students perform an in-class version of this sorting exercise by creating various patterns by which they can either organize themselves or organize items in the classroom. Examples: Have students sort themselves into groups by the color of the clothes they are wearing, accessories they are wearing (e.g. glasses, necklaces), etc.; Have groups of students organize books by color, shape, size, etc. At the end of every sorting exercise, have students count out, together, the people or objects in every sorted group.

Relate

While students are sorted into groups, ask them to work together in their groups to identify and describe 2 other patterns that they find throughout the classroom (examples could be tiles on the floor, shape of desks, size of windows, etc.). Give students several minutes to find, identify, and discuss patterns, and then have each group point out the pattern to the other groups.
