Please Note: this material was created for use in a classroom, but can be easily modified for homeschooling use.

Purpose/Skills

  • To recognize names of letters

Materials
Alphabet book, alphabet chart (optional)

Vocabulary
ABCs
letters
alphabet

Literature Suggestion
Read any alphabet book.

Warm-Up
Sing the "ABC Song." You may want to point to each letter on an alphabet chart as you sing. Say each letter clearly. Have children join in. When children are comfortable singing, add some variations, such as clapping each letter, whispering each letter, or giving a good cheer at the end.

Procedure

  • Read an alphabet book. Ask children to point to the letters and say their names after you.
  • Hold a letter search. Ask a volunteer to find a letter in the room. Help children to identify the letters. Then tell them a word that begins with that letter.
Enrichment
Chant the "ABC Song" as a call-and-response. You say the letter, and have the children repeat what you say.

Observation Assessment

  • Proficient - Child is able to repeat the names of many or most of the letters of the alphabet clearly.
  • In Process - Child imitates some of the names of the letters, with varying amounts of accuracy.
  • Not Yet Ready - Child does not yet repeat the letter names or does so with little accuracy.
