1971 Charles joins the Royal Navy; relationship between Charles and Camilla falters.
1973 Camilla Shand and cavalry officer Andrew Parker Bowles marry in July.
1977 Charles meets teenager Diana Spencer for the first time.
1981 Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer marry at St. Paul's Cathedral in London.
1986 According to Charles's official biographer, Jonathan Dimbleby, Charles begins an affair with Camilla.
1992 The "Camillagate" tapes—embarrassingly intimate conversations between Charles and Camilla recorded from 1989—are published in the tabloids.

Later that year, the Palace officially acknowledges marital problems between Charles and Diana. Rumors of discord had been reported in the press for years.

In December, the separation of Prince Charles and Diana is announced.
1994 Prince Charles admits to adultery in a televised interview, which he said occurred after the marriage had, "irretrievably broken down, us both having tried."

In a televised interview later that year, Diana, who has also admitted to adultery, says "there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded."
1995 Camilla Parker Bowles and her husband divorce. Andrew Parker Bowles remarries the following year.
1996 Charles and Diana divorce.
1997 Diana is killed in a car crash. Her death is mourned around the world.
1999 Charles and Camilla appear in public together for the first time.
2000 The Queen acknowledges Charles and Camilla's relationship by attending a lunch also attended by Camilla.
2003 Camilla moves into Charles's residence, Clarence House.
2005 Charles and Camilla announce their engagement in February. The wedding, a civil ceremony, is to take place on April 8. The ceremony is moved to April 9 so that Prince Charles can attend the funeral of John Paul II.
2008 Charles and Camilla visit the Caribbean Sea island nations of Trinidad and Tobago.
2008 Charles and Camilla celebrate their third wedding anniversary on April 8 in Scotland.
