To solve each word problem in this math worksheet, students must decide which operation to use: addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Most of these real-life problems involve arithmetic with money.

This worksheet includes several FutureFit Extension Activities that highlight 21st Century skills like critical thinking, service mentality, and creativity. These FutureFit Extension Activities are designed to reinforce the concepts included in the worksheet activity while integrating real-world skills. They can be used as in-class independent practice or group activities, or assigned for take-home or independent work.

Investigate

(10-15 minutes, coins, scales or balances):
Present the following scenario to the students: “You are at the beach and going to the boardwalk to purchase souvenirs. You have been saving coins in your piggy banks all year and now you just cannot wait to find some great trinkets to take home. Your parents say you can only take $10. Since you will be walking and you don’t want to be weighed down too much, you want to find out what combinations of coins equal $10 but weigh the least.” Give each student a few of each coin and a scale or balance to work out the problem. If you do not have access to scales or balances for each group, weigh the coins ahead of time or look up the weights online.

Serve

(10-15 minutes, computer/tablets and Internet):
Present the following scenario to the students: “You have just inherited a fairly large sum of money from a distant great-uncle, $10,000. The uncle’s wish is that you use half of the money to help the poor in other countries by giving them an opportunity to support themselves. The other half, you may keep for yourself. How will you choose to help the poor?” Allow students to use tablets or computers to look at International’s Gift Catalog and choose which programs they will support with their inheritance. They should make a list of the programs/animals and the cost of each, and determine how much they can afford to support. They may even add some of their “own” inheritance money (the portion that was theirs to keep) to purchase more.
