Great, Big Enormous Animals

Objectives

Materials

  • Information about the lengths of various animals
  • Outside space
  • Optional: rulers, reference materials

Procedures

  1. Take the children out on the playground.
  2. Have them walk various lengths of different animals.
    blue whale: 100 feet long
    African elephant: 13 feet tall
    giraffe: 18 feet tall
    tiger: 9 feet long
    Brontosaurus : 90 feet long
  3. Go to the library and look up dimensions on other animals.
Extension Activities:
  • Older children may want to use a ruler to get a more exact measurement.
  • Let the children take chalk and draw off the dimensions on a sidewalk.
  • Give children tape measures, rulers, meter sticks, scales, and otherinstruments to experiment with. Ask them to measure each other, riding toys, body parts, books, and other classroom objects.
  • Record children's height and weight several different times during theschool year and let them compare how much they've grown.
