In the left-hand column of a Double Entry Journal Template graphic organizer, have your students make a list of 3 pressing problems in the local community that they would like to see fixed within the next 5 years. Have them write down proposed solutions to those problems in the right-hand column. If the concept of “local community” is too abstract, substitute the school or classroom community. When students have completed the exercise, have them partner up and review each other’s problems and solutions, and together pick the one they judge to be most important. Gather the most important problems from each pairing and have the class vote on which problem is the most pressing. Together, develop a list of solutions to that problem and record them on the board.
