This FutureFit Project is a supplemental project-based lesson covering states of matter—gases, liquids, and solids. It is designed to reinforce core science subject material while also incorporating social-emotional learning and character education skills and concepts.
OVERVIEW:
This FutureFit lesson is designed to supplement a standard 12-15 unit lesson for 2nd-grade Physical Science by offering a unique project that ties together the core academic concepts with a set of FutureFit social-emotional and character education skills.
STUDENT/GROUP OUTPUT:
Students will participate in two inquiry-based activities designed to answer questions about the observable behavior of gases, liquids, and solids.
SUGGESTED SUBJECT PREREQUISITES:
It is suggested that students should have studied the following subject material as background for this lesson:
- A basic understanding of the structure and properties of matter
- A basic understanding of the properties of gases, liquids, and solids
TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES (suggested):
- Internet access
STANDARDS ALIGNMENT
These activities support the following NGSS earth science curriculum standards:
- PS1,A, Structure and Properties of Matter
- 2-PS1-1, Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties
- 2-PS1-4, Construct and argument with evidence that some changes caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some cannot
