Students explore ways to conserve, reduce, and reuse items. The value of energy conservation is discussed.

This worksheet includes several FutureFit Extension Activities that highlight 21st Century skills like critical thinking, service mentality, and creativity. These FutureFit Extension Activities are designed to reinforce the concepts included in the worksheet activity while integrating real-world skills. They can be used as in-class independent practice or group activities, or assigned for take-home or independent work.

FutureFit Extension Activities

Create

10-15 minutes):
Ask students to choose one or a combination of the following items, and draw something they could make from recycling the object:

  • tires
  • plastic bottles
  • plastic bags
  • yoga mats

If time, allow them to search the internet for a list of items that are made from these recycled products.

Solve

(10-15 minutes)
Divide students into groups of 2-3. Print the Math Problems worksheet and cut apart the word problems. Give each group a word problem, and ask them to write a story about the problem. They should state the environmental problem that could be occurring, why they wanted to help, and what they did to solve the problem. (For example, if the problem was about collecting paper for recycling, perhaps they could write about how they noticed that the school was throwing away a lot of paper and they wanted to recycle the paper instead to reduce waste. Perhaps the students would solve the problem by making a paper recycling container for each classroom to collect the paper.) Finally, students should use the data in the word problem to write a correct equation.
