Study World War II through the true story of young war heroes—led by a fifteen-year-old boy—who helped spark a full-blown Danish resistance. This teacher's guide to The Boys Who Challenged Hitler: Knud Pedersen and the Churchill Club includes discussion questions and class activities. Students will analyze and interpret the non-fiction text by Phillip Hoose, write a narrative, create a club to solve a community problem, and research the history of the paper clip as a symbol of defiance in Norway. This guide is aligned with Common Core ELA standards for history/social studies and anchor standards for reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
