What would you do if you were a philanthropist? This worksheet includes a reading passage about Sir Edward Hallstrom–a successful businessman and one of Australia's greatest philanthropists–and a creative writing prompt about philanthropy.

This worksheet includes several FutureFit Extension Activities that highlight 21st Century skills like critical thinking, service mentality, and creativity. These FutureFit Extension Activities are designed to reinforce the concepts included in the worksheet activity while integrating real-world skills. They can be used as in-class independent practice or group activities, or assigned for take-home or independent work.

FutureFit Extension Activities

Create

(10-15 minutes, bulletin board or whiteboard, pre-cut apples, leaves or sticky notes):
Make a giving tree using the instructions found in “Make a Giving Tree” printable.

Serve

(10-15 minutes):
Express to students that philanthropy doesn’t always involve giving away money to help others. Many people choose to donate their time. Ask a teacher in a younger grade if your students can visit his or her classroom to help the younger students with an activity, or to read to a younger student. Or perhaps have your students help another teacher by volunteering to clean up the classroom or help prepare a lesson.
