Decorating Tips for the Classroom

Your classroom set-up sends an important message to students. Here are some decorating suggestions for creating a student environment that is soothing, relaxing, and safe.

  • Floor lamps (turn them on instead of overhead lights for a cozier atmosphere.)

  • Plants

  • Wind chimes

  • Recliner or arm chair

  • Magazine table next to recliner

  • Tall director's chair or stool (for teacher—instead of sitting behind an imposing desk)

  • White Christmas lights around the chalkboard

  • Student level bookshelves

  • Framed posters

  • Personal family pictures (from both the teacher's and the students' families.)

  • Different types of student desks placed in secluded spots (for working away from the larger group)

  • Mirror hung at a child's height
