Have students draw a picture of what they enjoy doing most with their best friend. Use this art printable as part of a unit on friendship or as an extension activity for the Caldecott Honor book One Cool Friend, illustrated by David Small and written by Toni Buzzeo.

This worksheet includes several FutureFit Extension Activities that highlight 21st Century skills like creativity and self-reflection. These FutureFit Extension Activities are designed to reinforce the concepts included in the worksheet activity while integrating real-world skills. They can be used as in-class independent practice or group activities, or assigned for take-home or independent work.

FutureFit Extension Activities

Create

Have students use the worksheet as an outline or template for creating a collage of experiences they have had with their best friend. Students should use photos, mementos, or clips from magazines or online images to represent those experiences that they have had with their friends.

As an alternative or differentiation, students can use a character in one of the books or novels that have been read in the unit and create a collage about that person instead.

As a capstone project for the entire class, use all student-created collages to make a Friendship Bulletin Board to display all of your students’ hard work.

Reflect

Have students select a favorite character from a familiar book, movie, game, or TV show that they wish could be a real-life friend. Students can then list 3 reasons why this character would be a perfect friend for them, and why they would be a good friend for that character! If necessary, have students use a 2-column graphic organizer to record the information.
