Judith Jamison

1943-
American dancer and choreographer
Birthplace: Philadelphia, PA

Judith Jamison studied ballet, tap, jazz, and modern dance and made her debut with the American Ballet Theatre in 1964. She became a member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in 1965 and danced with the company for 15 years. Judith recalled, "Once you've danced, you always dance. You can't deny the gifts that God sends your way." She also starred in the hit Broadway musical Sophisticated Ladies. Judith was appointed Artistic Director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1989, and she has become an authority on modern dance.

Judith received numerous awards and honorary degrees, most recently from Yale University. She is also an advocate for education in the arts. In 1999, she was a Kennedy Center Honoree. Her autobiography entitled Dancing Spirit was published in 1993.
