Crystal Rock Garden

Age: 4 and up
Time: 30 minutes
Type of Activity: Science

Kids love magic: watching things appear out of thin air. When your child makes crystals form on ordinary rocks and pebbles, she'll feel just like a magician!

Materials needed:

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 oz alum (sold in the canning or spice sections of supermarkets)
  • Clear glass bowl
  • Clean rocks and pebbles
  • Mixing spoon

    What to do:

Step One: Your child should go outside and gather as many rocks and pebbles as she likes.

Step Two: Rinse the rocks clean in the sink or tub.

Step Three: On the stove, boil 1/2 cup of water.

Step Four: Add 2 oz alum to the hot water and stir until the alum is dissolved.

Step Five: Pour the solution into a clear glass bowl.

Step Six: Fill the bowl halfway with the clean rocks and pebbles.

Now watch in amazement as crystals form like magic!
