Haya

Haya (hī'u) [key], people of Africa living on Lake Victoria in the extreme northwest of Tanzania. They originally came from W Uganda, a region they left because of endless wars. There are now about 1 million Haya; they grow bananas and coffee in a region that is rich and populous. They belong to a group of peoples known collectively as the Interlacustrine Bantu. The Haya include the Basiba, Heia, Kiziba, Wahaya, Wassiba, and Ziba.
